December Miscellanea

The Art of Manliness website is about to name the Manliest Man of 2008, and a friend of mine is in the running. Matthew Chancey is one of the manliest men I know, and I can’t think of a better man to win the title. Ever since I’ve known him, Matt has been quick to stand up for his friends, represent the underdog, and help the weak, no matter what the cost and without ever shirking his duties as a father.

I could go on and on, but the contest ends on the 14th, so go vote for Matt, and while you’re there, poke around on the Art of Manliness site. There are some great articles on things like how to start a fire without matches or land an airplane, and why most of the modern ideas of pop counterculture and pop psychobabble are so stupid.

  1. Do you recommend “The Art of Manliness” blog? I’m just wondering from what I see and read of it. It seems to be managed by a group of students who care more for great ideas of Men than great ideas of God, though they do have some clever articles. Their recommended book list is quite “interesting” for people who seem to desire a bring-back of “good-old-fashioned Manliness with a capital M”. I wonder at why they would’ve chosen Matt Chancey as one of the choices for their contest.

    Simply curious.

  2. Oh yes, and what a cigar! (smile)

  3. I think that the Art of Manliness blog, though imperfect, has some very good content. It’s true that the authors seem more interested in traditional standards than trancendant standards, but there is a lot of overlap there, so it makes perfect sense for them to choose Matt as a finalist. Oh, and by the way, he won. Thanks for voting, everyone!
